The Gordie Howe International Bridge team recently released the final $300,000 (CDN) of Community Organization Investment funding to 14 recipients in Canada and the US. Since launching in 2020 as part of the project’s Community Benefits Plan, $1 million (CDN) in small grants has been provided to 67 projects led by local non-profits, making lasting positive enhancements in the Sandwich and Delray communities. 

This year’s funding was provided to nine organizations from Windsor and five from Detroit, supporting events, programming and/or infrastructure improvements in amounts ranging from $5,000 – $50,000 (CDN). 

Funding was issued to the following projects: 

Canada: 

  • Assumption Cares – Ongoing programming support 
  • Assumption University – Father Joe Quinn Education Series 
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex – BBBSWE In-School Mentoring 
  • Feeding Windsor Essex – Community Meals, Lunch Club, After School Soup Konnection  
  • Society of Saint Vincent de Paul – Ongoing programming support 
  • St. John’s Anglican – Feeding Sandwich Program 
  • United Way – Ignite Academy programming 
  • Windsor Essex Community Health Centre – Food and Mood Program 
  • Windsor Police Service – Windsor Police Service Diversity Barbecue  

US: 

  • Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation – Detroit Public Schools Community District Health Hub 
  • Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision – La PAZ (Pedestrian Access Zone) Engagement and Design Workshops 
  • Trinity St. Mark’s Pantry and Gardens – Feed the Homeless Program 
  • Unity in Our Community Timebank – Let’s Get Moving programming 
  • Urban Neighbourhood Initiatives – Bikes and Bebidas Program 

The overall initiative funding has benefited community partnerships, community safety and connections, aesthetics and landscaping, regional tourism and economic benefits, food security and wellness, and local history and culture.
