Windsor, Ontario • Today, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team and the City of Windsor announced the opening of the Broadway Street multi-use path and Malden Park Trailhead. This new active transportation feature will connect Malden Park to the Gordie Howe International Bridge, where people can use the bridge’s multi-use path to walk or cycle to the United States. In addition to the path, a new trailhead has also been installed at Malden Park to provide path users with a safe place near the Bridge to meet and park.
The new Broadway Street multi-use path extends approximately 0.6 kilometres from an existing Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) trail at Ojibway Parkway to an existing municipal trail at Matchett Road. This connection will be part of a Binational Trail network that links broader regional trails, including the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway Trail, the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail and the Trans Canada Trail in Canada, and the Joe Louis Greenway, Great Lakes Way and Iron Belle Trail in the United States.
Funding for the Broadway Street multi-use path connection and Malden Park Trailhead was provided by the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan. Community consultation identified active transportation investments as a priority, especially a possible connection to the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway Trail.
Construction began in June and was completed in September. The path and trailhead are now part of the City of Windsor’s municipal trail network.
Quotes
“The Gordie Howe International Bridge stands as the epi-centre of a new bi-national trail corridor where ecotourism, sustainability and breathtaking views intersect. Through the project team’s investments in the Broadway Street multi-use path, and the Malden Park Trailhead, as well as the bike lanes on Sandwich Street, there are now safe and designated routes for pedestrians and cyclists to connect to Windsor-Essex County’s expansive active transportation network from the new bridge.”
– Charl van Niekerk, CEO, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority
“Bridging North America is proud that construction of the Malden Park Trailhead and Broadway Street multi-use path is officially complete. This new trailhead provides improved access to the park’s trail system, and the connection to the rest of the city as well as to the Gordie Howe International Bridge. It’s projects like these, funded through the project’s Community Benefits Plan, that make a lasting impact in the community.”
– David Henderson, CEO, Bridging North America
“The City of Windsor thanks the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team for this latest investment in transportation and healthy, active living opportunities for residents in our community. Combined with recent announcements of the new bridge becoming the first international border crossing within the 28,000 km Trans Canada Trail network, this latest trail will help close a gap and further connect our communities. We are Building Windsor’s Future with a focus on investment, growth, and sustainability. With this project, the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan is supporting the vital role that active transportation plays in building sustainable, healthy, and vibrant communities.”
– Mayor Drew Dilkens, City of Windsor
Quick facts:
- The Broadway Street multi-use path initiative is a result of community consultation during the development of the Community Benefits Plan from 2015-2018 where investment into active transportation infrastructure was strongly supported.
- The Broadway Street multi-use path meets Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements and is approximately three metres wide. The asphalt path is separated from vehicular traffic by road markings and rumble strips, where space permits. To enhance safety, street lighting has also been installed.
