Malden Park Observation Area
The Malden Park Observation Area will provide an attractive, safe location, using an existing high elevation in the region, for residents, students and tourists to observe the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Opened to the public in November 2023, the observation area includes a landscaped area enhanced with railings, benches and wayfinding signage, directing viewers’ attention to a clear vantage of the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the future operations.
The observation area was funded by the $20 million Neighbourhood Infrastructure Strategy, a key component of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan. Funding is provided to initiatives that are consistent with the Crossing Agreement and the key regional priorities identified through consultation including community partnerships, community safety and connections, economic benefits, and aesthetics and landscaping.
The Malden Park Observation Area is accessible by paths from the park’s Matchette Road and Malden Road parking lots.
ACCESSIBILITY FEATURES
In July 2022, the project team collected community feedback through a survey on the accessibility of the initial observation area designs. Feedback has been incorporated into the observation area design, where appropriate, including:
- a ramp slope compliant with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
- viewing binoculars
- project information signage
- additional seating
- guardrails around observation area perimeter and handrails on both sides of ramp.
