The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is pleased to announce the artist for the project’s third and final Public Art commission, Aesthetic Bridge Lighting.  Douglas Coupland, a contemporary visual artist, designer and novelist, will develop an artistic lighting concept that highlights the symbolic connection linking Canada and the U.S.    

Installation of the second public art commission at the Gordie Howe International Bridge project is underway. Titled Aazhoge, the 3-metre/10-foot-high free-standing sculpture is a contemporary reflection of the culture and traditions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, with emphasis on local Anishinaabe First Nations.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, announced that a selection process is underway for the position of Chair of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) Board of Directors.

Today, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities celebrated the latest achievement in the ongoing construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. With the work to connect the bridge deck between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan now complete, the Gordie Howe International Bridge became an official border crossing. 

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is pleased to share the artistic concept developed by contemporary artist, Jordan Sook, that recognizes and commemorates the region’s role as a destination for freedom-seekers of African descent leaving behind slavery and oppression by travelling the Underground Railroad to Canada. 

June 2024 marks five years of delivery for the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan, with the project team unwavering in its commitment to enhance the communities closest to the project. Today, thirteen organizations serving Sandwich/west Windsor and Delray/Southwest Detroit are the latest recipients of $200,000 (CDN) in Community Benefits Plan funding. 

Excitement is building for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team as they begin the final steps to connect the bridge deck over the Detroit River. With 26 metres/85 feet remaining, the same width as an official NHL rink, it is anticipated that the two sides will connect at the end of June.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is celebrating 2000 days and over 12 million hours worked since the first shovel hit the ground on this legacy infrastructure project. This achievement, reached on March 27, 2024, was made possible by the determination and hard work of trade workers and project staff. 

Today, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and Trans Canada Trail proudly announced that the Gordie Howe International Bridge will join the Trans Canada Trail and become the first international bridge border crossing within the 28,000 km trail network. The official announcement took place this morning at Windsor City Hall.
