Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, announced the appointment of Charl van Niekerk to the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), the Crown corporation responsible for the delivery of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is pleased to announce the selection of Michael Belmore, celebrated Anishinaabe artist, as the successful candidate for the Indigenous art commission to be installed at the Canadian Port of Entry.

Michael Belmore, an accomplished Anishinaabe artist, has been selected to create a free-standing sculpture that will be installed at the Canadian Port of Entry as one of the project’s Public Art commissions. The stand-alone piece will celebrate and express the heritage and culture of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, visible to travellers as they move through the Port of Entry. The concept, still under development will be shared at a later date, with installation anticipated before the end of 2023.

This winter, 17 post-secondary co-op students joined Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) for an opportunity to apply their skills and contribute to the Gordie Howe International Bridge project.

The bridge towers continue to climb as single pylons, with the Canadian and US towers both standing over 174 metres/570 feet tall. The project team has approximately 10 cement pours left on each tower until they reach their final heights of 220 metres/722 feet. This is anticipated to occur in 2023.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is the largest and most ambitious infrastructure project along the Canada-United States border. With four main components including the bridge, ports of entry in Canada and the US and the Michigan Interchange (I-75), the complex project requires a high degree of planning, attention to detail and innovative design and building techniques. From conception to completion, engineers play an integral role and are involved in every aspect of development.

On March 22, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project’s cross-border Environmental Management System (EMS) won a 2022 Business Achievement Award in the category of Project Merit from the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ).  The awards took place at the Environmental Industry Summit XXI in San Diego, California.
