The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team has been recognized with the John Henry Garrood King Medal for an outstanding paper at the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Awards Ceremony in London, England.
The winning paper, titled “Planning and design of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, North America”, outlines the need for the new border crossing, the results of the environmental assessment, the design of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the project’s history and evolution over the years.
The paper was written by members of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team, including Leslie Martin, Zaher Yousif, Bruce Campbell, Martin Furrer and Matt Chynoweth. It was published in March 2023.
“We are honoured to receive the prestigious John Henry Garrood King Medal,” says Zaher Yousif, Chief Bridge Engineer and Vice President, Engineering at Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. “Producing this paper was a tremendous feat that involved persistent effort and commitment across the project team. We look forward to sharing the paper with readers around the world.”
The ICE Publishing Awards, which were awarded on October 11, 2024, celebrate authors who have produced work of exceptional quality and benefit to the civil engineering, construction and materials science community. The John Henry Garrood King Medal is awarded annually for the best paper on tunnels, soil mechanics or bridges.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is the first in North America to receive this recognition.
“Planning and design of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, North America” is free to read for a year on the ICE Virtual Library.
