2024 was monumental for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project with achievements that were both on public display and behind-the-scenes. In honour of the jersey number our namesake, Gordie Howe, famously wore throughout his hockey career, here are the project’s top nine highlights that defined 2024.

Excitement is building as the Gordie Howe International Bridge project draws closer to construction completion and opening day in 2025. This fall, a new cohort of co-op students had the opportunity to be part of history in the making on this once-in-generation infrastructure project. 

The architecturally epic Gordie Howe International Bridge project has been recognized for making an impact that echoes well beyond its physical footprint. The project team recently brought home the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike’s Association’s (IBTTA) Social Responsibility Award, acknowledging the project for its social responsibility efforts, including its community benefits plan, active transportation investments and environmental management planning.

While many know him as the man who named a generation, Douglas Coupland will soon add bridge lighting artist to his lengthy list of accomplishments. Following an artist selection process during summer 2024, Mr. Coupland was announced as the successful candidate who will create a dynamic and striking lighting concept that will grace the Gordie Howe International Bridge. 

Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) has won a Silver Leaf Award of Merit for its “Completing Tower Construction for the Gordie Howe International Bridge” video. The award, presented by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Canada, celebrates excellence in business communication. 

This fall, crews are planting shrubs, grasses and herbaceous plants on the four road bridges built over Interstate-75. The road bridges are located at Green Street, Clark Street, Springwells Street and Livernois Avenue.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team has been recognized with the John Henry Garrood King Medal for an outstanding paper at the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Awards Ceremony in London, England.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project’s Health and Safety team has received another health and safety award, celebrating its “safety first” culture on the construction site.

To mark “2000 Days of Construction,” the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team held a hard hat sticker contest. This was a chance for the public to demonstrate creative skills and show appreciation for the thousands of workers making the Gordie Howe International Bridge project a reality.
