The Gordie Howe International Bridge project’s Health and Safety team has received another health and safety award, celebrating its “safety first” culture on the construction site.
On September 26, 2024, the group was selected as silver winners for the OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) Team of the Year, by OHS Canada Honours.
The team’s robust Safety Management Plan includes fulsome and mandatory orientation sessions, foreman lunch and learns, mock drills, interdisciplinary reviews on safety procedures, focused communications on critical activities specific to Gordie Howe International Bridge project such as working at heights, mentoring and weekly recognition programs, celebrations of National Health and Safety Week, annual surveys and project wide safety moments.
“Ensuring our workers’ health and safety has always been of utmost priority,” says Clayton Sereres of Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, Associate Vice President, Regulatory Compliance Services. “This award validates the effort and dedication of not only our team, but every person who comes to work demonstrating a safety-first culture.”
“The project team’s strong emphasis on health and safety is the reason we’ve been able to celebrate recent accomplishments such as the bridge deck connection,” says David Henderson, CEO, Bridging North America. “I’m proud to see the project’s Health and Safety team continue to receive recognition for their work.”
The project’s team has received multiple awards for its health and safety initiatives, most recently the John M. Beck Award received in fall 2023.
