It has been a busy summer for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project with key accomplishments marking the bridge deck connection, five years of delivery for the Community Benefits Plan and the bridge officially becoming an international crossing.
Staff at Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) have been well equipped to handle one of its busiest seasons to date, thanks in part to a new cohort of bright and ambitious co-op students.
20 students are completing a four-month co-op term with WDBA this month. Since May, they have been working in different departments such as security, operations, engineering, information technology, environmental management and human resources, among others.
At WDBA, co-op students develop hands-on skills while collaborating with and learning from full-time employees, setting them up for future success in their careers.
Madison Lennox, a co-op student in the Human Resources department, has completed two terms with WDBA. She credits an encouraging workplace for making her experience memorable.
“The supportive and collaborative environment at WDBA makes it a fantastic co-op opportunity,” Lennox says. “The project team is dedicated to professional development, providing continuous learning opportunities and challenges that allow co-op students like me to improve and grow.”
WDBA hosts co-op students from across Ontario, with this semester’s students hailing from the University of Windsor, McMaster University, the University of Waterloo and St. Clair College.
Since 2016, WDBA's co-op program has welcomed 251 students. Many of the students have returned for second and third terms, with some even being hired as full-time employees afterwards.
