Christina Vickery and Larysa Hyzka from WDBA's Engineering TeamToday is International Women’s Day! In recognition, we are highlighting some of the women who contribute to the bridge project. Christina Vickery and Larysa Hyzka are valued members of the engineering team.

Christina Vickery, Project Manager

As a Project Manager, Christina manages a number of engineering contracts between WDBA and its contractors as the Canadian and US sites of the Ports of Entry are prepared for eventual handover to the private-sector partner. With a degree in civil engineering and experience on several highway and bridge projects, Christina saw the Gordie Howe International Bridge as an opportunity to apply what she’s learned and be part of a once-in-a-lifetime project in her hometown.

For women starting a career in engineering, Christina said “Be brave, ask questions and seek out answers. Chances are that if you have a question, others around you are probably wondering the same thing but are either too afraid to ask or aren’t sure how to ask. Be the one who asks!”

Larysa Hyzka, Co-op Student

Larysa is a third-year engineering student at the University of Windsor and is completing her second work term in WDBA’s Engineering department. Her work to date has focused on the Early Works activities taking place to prepare the Canadian Port of Entry for future construction. She was attracted to the project due to the significance of working on one of Canada’s largest infrastructure projects, which to her represents “a civil engineer’s dream.”

Of the United Nations’s 2017 theme “Be Bold for Change” for International Women’s Day, Larysa said “Change does not have to mean fixing the world’s problems, or tackling big issues in society. It can be a personal change to better yourself. Be bold by asking for that promotion, or going back to school, or taking that next step in life, to get you where you want to be.”
