Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) continues to make significant progress in preparing the Canadian Port of Entry (POE) for the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. As part of the preparatory works, many elements of utility infrastructure including hydro transmission towers, must be relocated to make way for the bridge and inspection facilities.
In January 2017, Hydro One erected the last of three new transmission towers, replacing three previous structures, and will be installing the majority of the electrical circuits at the JC Keith Transformer Station underground to facilitate WDBA’s project.
The installation process began with the construction of footings to support the galvanized steel towers. The new towers are assembled in sections on the ground. The first sections are then anchored to the foundations and the remaining preassembled pieces are then raised into position by telescopic cranes where they are bolted together. More than 2,400 bolts are used in each of the towers which weigh up to 22,100 kilograms (48,678 pounds) and stand up to 43 metres (140 feet) in height.
